The mural on the building, originally designed for Cobfathers (a barbecue takeout joint) and now part of Smash Bros (a popular burger restaurant), was created by artist J. Kenneth Leap and painted with the help of Diane and Annie Fredrickson. The design features a bold and playful scene that is both visually captivating and symbolic. On one side of the mural, towering corn stalks pay homage to fresh, farm-to-table ingredients, emphasizing the business's commitment to quality produce. The depiction of corn, a staple crop, also represents nourishment and abundance, perfectly fitting for a food establishment.
The most striking part of the mural is the UFO beaming up a cow, which humorously connects to the idea of burgers and beef, aligning with Smash Bros' identity as a burger joint. The whimsical image—a cow being abducted by aliens—adds a fun and surreal element, making the mural not only an artistic statement but also a conversation starter for patrons.
The mural has become iconic to the building and the community. When the new owners considered changing it, their followers quickly voiced opposition, highlighting its deep connection with locals and its role in the business's identity.
As a potential selfie wall, the mural’s vivid colors, unique imagery, and large scale make it an ideal backdrop for social media photos. This interactive feature provides a valuable marketing tool, as patrons are likely to take pictures in front of the mural and share them online, helping the business gain organic visibility through social media. The mural transforms the building from a simple structure into a recognizable local landmark, drawing in loyal customers and curious passersby, while also building a bridge between the business and its community through shared artistic appreciation.
