In 2022 Reimagine Runnemede approached Cook's Florist with the idea to transform the blank, weathered wall of the former Dee’s School of Dance into a vibrant mural that would reflect the heart and soul of the community. What began as an aging, nondescript facade was completely transformed into a stunning work of art, thanks to a generous grant from the NJ State Council on the Arts, administered by the Camden County Cultural and Heritage Commission.
The mural, titled "A Small Town with a Big Heart," was designed by renowned muralist Yulia Avgustinovich. Drawing inspiration from love poems written by local middle school students, Yulia incorporated elements that resonate with Runnemede’s identity. The once plain, faded wall now bursts with vibrant floral imagery and scenes depicting the town’s cherished landmarks, such as Runnemede Lake Park, Mt. Calvary Union Church, and the Ferris wheel from St. Theresa’s Carnival. These local icons are nestled among blooming roses, peonies, and other symbolic flowers that represent growth, community, and renewal.
The mural also features images of townspeople biking, jogging, and enjoying outdoor activities, reflecting the active and close-knit nature of the Runnemede community. The inclusion of local wildlife, such as flying geese, goldfinches, and butterflies, connects the artwork to the natural beauty of the region, symbolizing freedom, peace, and transformation.
This project was a true community effort, with 47 volunteers from the town coming together under Yulia’s guidance to bring the mural to life. The collaborative process not only revitalized the building but also reinforced the town’s spirit of togetherness. Cook’s Florist, with its newly adorned mural, now stands as a beacon of color and creativity along the Black Horse Pike, embodying the essence of a "small town with a big heart."
